Conical Points for ERW Pipe Piles

ERW Pipe Piles are very versatile in the Deep Foundations Industry. One point that makes them diverse is the various attachments that can be applied at the end of the pile so they are better suited for different soil conditions. Over the next few months, we will be exploring the various components that can be attached to the end of a pile to increase their usefulness. The first in our series we will look into is conical points.

HSS In the Wild Pt 2

HSS truly opens up the possibilities for architecturally exposed structural steel, allowing architects and structural engineers to meet the challenges of modern architecture and design the type of structures that break new aesthetic ground and enrich the public landscape. But it can also have everyday uses that are all around us – if you know where to look! In our continuing photo blog series, let’s take a look at more places where we discovered HSS in the Wild.

Top 5 Reasons to Specify HSS (A1085 or A500 Grade C) Instead of Pipe (A53)

As I talk to my colleagues around the country, I’m always asked about what makes an ASTM A1085 or A500 Grade C HSS round better than the ASTM A53 pipe the local fabricator is offering. Since A1085 and A500 Grade C are both structural specifications, round HSS products are produced to be used in structural applications and general construction use. An A53 pipe size tube on the other hand is produced to allow the proper flow of oil, water or gas and is not intended to be used in structural applications. Let’s break down the top five reasons to specify A1085 or A500 Grade C round HSS on your next project instead of A53 Pipe.

Increasing A1085 Awareness at SEAoO Annual Conference, September 8-9 2016

Last week, Atlas Tube attended the Structural Engineers Association of Ohio (SEAoO) Annual Conference in Columbus, OH. With over 100 professional engineers and aspiring (student) engineers in attendance, the SEAoO Conference offered a variety of technical sessions for individuals to earn PDH credits (up to 15 total).  Our favorite program from the two-day conference was Duane Miller of Lincoln Electric: “Welded Connections: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly”. During Mr. Miller’s talk, he showcased what a good weld is vs a bad weld with visual evidence. He also helped to “demystify” HSS connections by showing a variety of HSS welds in practical applications – attendees were genuinely interested in this topic!
